It is often difficult to navigate the choppy waters of being newly unemployed. Whether the change was by choice or not, the change presented can prove to be difficult and anxiety ridden.
One of those choices many people confront is when to alert their professional network that they are job hunting, and how to present that change. Many people would advise you not to present yourself as unemployed, as many employers prefer employed candidates calmly searching to the perceived "fevered" search of someone in need of employment.
But in reality hiding your unemployment status will only lead to an embarrassing revelation during the interview process. Its better to be truthful upfront and confront the elephant in the room before it becomes an issue. That said, would you truly want to work for a company that requires, from the start, to wear a mask.

I agree that it's safe to say that you're job hunting on LinkedIn. Letting your online connections know that you're looking for work is one aspect of networking. Networking is one of three key essentials to finding work. I encourage job seekers to make sure their social media profile and posts are "recruiter/employer appropriate" and to include social media in their job searching toolbox.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Colin. I appreciate your advice and agree completely. As social media becomes more popular more and more employers are using it to do their home work on potential candidates.
