BERLIN—Serge Trigano did not always enjoy working at the all-inclusive Club Méditerranée that his father, Gilbert, founded in the 1960s.
“It was quite challenging,” he said, reflecting on the experience.
But working with his two sons, Jérémie and Benjamin? “I love it,” he said.
The Trigano family’s more recent creation, Mama Shelter, is a tangible offshoot of that cross-generational collaboration. The design-led brand features a hip aesthetic with all the technological touch points that appeal to younger generations but without skipping on the clean rooms, comfortable beds and top-notch food and beverage that are the long-standing hallmarks of good hospitality.
That’s not something Serge could have created on his own, he freely admitted during an interview in the lobby of the 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin, a like-minded player in the growing lifestyle space.
“Things are changing so quickly. People like me are not aware of what’s happening with new technology, music. … (My sons) know how to honor the technology,” he said. “It’s difficult for me to send email. It’s the maximum of what I can do.”
The result is a brand that appeals to both young and old alike, Serge said. Whereas some lifestyle players appeal only to a small subset of travelers,Mama Shelter sees guests of all walks of life.
“We are a place where people who can afford to spend €50 or €100 ($53 or $105) for dinner or people who want to buy a pizza for €15 ($16); people who want a room at €69 ($73) or people who want to take a suite at €250 ($263).
“That’s a mix of customers that maybe makes the success of Mama Shelter,” Serge said.
That mix extends to on-property guest and local resident alike, he said. At the Mama Shelter Paris, the brand’s first hotel, some 70% of demand in the ground floor restaurants comes from outside the hotel.
“It’s a fun place,” he said—one where large groups gather at communal tables while couples canoodle at two-toppers nearby.
“That’s what makes the place unique,” he added.
