Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile, Why they need to be in Sync.

If you are wondering why employers and recruiters research your social media, the answer is simple. Recruiters believe people are less likely to exaggerate, in public, where friends and colleagues can see, but not on their resume submitted privately.

Often, while reviewing the resumes of potential candidates, we come across several discrepancies between a persons resume and LinkedIn profile. This can be a major red flag during the interview process as most employers now perform a social media search as part of the candidate selection progression. If your resume and LinkedIn profile do not match or, at least provide a consistent snap shot of your career background, many employers will pass you by.

With that in mind, if you are applying for a new position chances are you've touched up your resume and LinkedIn profile. However, if the information on one doesn't support the claims on the other than you are doing yourself more harm than good. Where the two shouldn't be exact reflections, they should definitely compliment one and other. Generally your resume should be tailored for the position you are applying for, where as your LinkedIn profile should be a compilation of your career, with correct dates, accomplishments and connections.
